In the summer of 1973, at the age of 47 Joyce Travelbee died after a brief sickness. She was continually developing new methods and was far ahead of her time in the development of these concepts.
She started a doctoral program in Florida in 1973. Unfortunately, she was not able to finish the program because she died later that year. As from 1970, till the time of her death, Travelbee served as the Project Director of Graduate Education at Louisiana State University School of Nursing (Petiprin, 2016). The theory she developed has lived on regardless of her premature death. The theory still influences the nursing profession, healthcare and the hospice movement as a whole.
